Rob Ryan Analysis

Rob Ryan - An eccentric genius.

Rob Ryan is a British artist that specializes in paper cutting and screen printing, Ryan was born in Cyprus on the 5th of November 1962, he received a Master of Arts is printmaking from the Royal College of Art and also studied at Trent Polytechnic. He is often commissioned by magazines, album covers, book covers,
greeting cards, and actually published his own book This is for You in 2007.

A majority of his work can be seen here, his shop can be accessed here, and his recent work can be seen here.

'Home Girl' An example of the romantic themes present in Rob Ryan's work.
Rob Ryan's work is usually themed around fairytale-like environments and is quite reminiscent of the romantic period; the fact that Rob's hand-cuts all of his pieces gives them a 'One off' feel making them unique and personal as he can't get every detail perfect like you would be able to with a laser cutter; he also has to put an extreme amount of planning into his work as they are almost always done on a single piece of paper so he uses his bridges in the design of the piece giving the work an organic feel while also keeping it structurally sound without detracting from the aesthetic. Rob also tends to use a monochromatic colour scheme in the majority of his works which keeps them simple and allows for the design and composition of the paper cut be the focus of the piece and also allows the pieces to work well in almost any neutral colour scheme which makes them great for being on greetings cards, posters, books, etc. as having them in your home would be pleasing to the eye as opposed to the possibility of them being quite garish and out of place.

My personal response to Rob Ryan's artwork is that I honestly love it and greatly admire his skill and the effort required to make such amazing and extravagant pieces from a single sheet of paper, also I feel that you can see from his work that he is passionate and has an emotional attachment to each and every piece though his use of messages and metaphor.
This is one of my personal favourite pieces by Rob Ryan,
I love the intricate detail and feel that the typography and message are great.
